Ran 1st and only flying doctor service in Sierra Leone. Dr. Eleady-Cole flew to remote parts of the country at short moments notice, saving the lives of ordinary miners, paramount chiefs, senior government officials (for example Kamara-Taylor and S.I. Koroma) and also well known businessmen such as Jamil Sahid Mohamed. This service was important, because, due to the remoteness and poor infrastructure, (also lack of hospitals) in most parts of Sierra Leone at the time, it was the best way to save lives.
In the early years of President Siaka Stevens reign, he had an accident. A panel of doctors were summoned. Dr. Eleady-Cole was chosen to accompany the president for treatment abroad. He later became a trusted friend and personal physician to the president, visiting numerous countries with the President. He was even introduced to Chairman Mao, by President Stevens (late leader of China) on one visit to China. A picture exists of President Stevens, Chairman Mao and Dr. Eleady-Cole during a state visit. President Stevens is said to have remarked about Dr. Eleady-Cole, “I like and trust him because he has no interest in politics. He is a good man”(President Siaka Stevens)
Exchange with Queen Elisabeth the II of Great Britain. During the commonwealth heads of government meeting held in Zimbabwe, some delegates were allowed to meet the queen for a few seconds each. When Dr. Eleady-Cole went up to the queen, he ended up staying far longer than was usual and protocol allowed. All the various delegations etc. started to wander what they were talking about. It turns out that they had a mutual acquaintance. The queen’s personal physician was at that time also treating Dr. Eleady-Cole.
Dr. Eleady-Cole held the sole right in Sierra Leone to treat and licence any pilot flying in and out of Sierra Leone. Regularly, most pilots paid a visit to 1 east street for their checkup and certification.
Dr. Eleady-Cole raised the idea of a medical school in Sierra Leone and also wanted to take over Hill station hospital and make it is centre of medical excellence.
Brought in the 1st Kidney dialysis machine into Sierra Leone.
Dr. Eleady-Cole conducted a study into the lifestyle habits of Senior civil servants and also your average man on the street. He focused on how the lifestyle had an impact on an individuals blood pressure. (when we have the complete study, we will put it online).
